Principles of Eastern Medicine and Meditation & Mindfulness, Dec. 3

Southwestern Oregon Community College’s Community Education Department is excited to be offering two new courses for winter term. Principles of Eastern Medicine (HE 0503 65) – Learn the ancient science of Ayurveda in this introductory course on this 5,000 year old practice that translates into “Wisdom of Life” or “Knowledge of Longevity.” The Principles of Eastern Medicine will educate you on a medical model that is based on lifestyle modifications rather than our present model of symptom management through medication or surgery. You will learn basic self-assessment tools to establish an understanding of your body type or constitution. You will gain awareness of the use of diet, breath/Pranayama, posture/Asana and mindfulness/Meditation as tools to enhance your wellbeing. This is a great course for students and athletes who would like to enhance their wellbeing and performance, as well as for those seeking relief from chronic pain or disease. Meditation and Mindfulness (HE 0501 65) – Meditation is an antidote to stress. It is a unique activity that is an art as well as a science. Learn how meditation and mindfulness can help you to meet life’s challenges. It has been used in cultures around the world for thousands of years to help people to thrive. This class will help you to understand the science behind meditation and its impact on the body, different methods of meditation and core elements to maintaining a regular practice. A regular practice in Meditation and Mindfulness is proven to decrease stress, strengthen immunity, improve quality of sleep as well as help manage the symptoms of depression and anxiety.
