Public Sewer Mains Smoke Testing, July 15

The City of Coos Bay will be conducting smoke tests of the public sewer mains located on Elrod Avenue between South 10th Street and South 11th Street. The testing will be done during July 15th through July 17th. These tests will assist the City in locating breaks and defects in the sewer system. During the test, you may see smoke coming from vent stacks on buildings or from holes in the ground. Don’t be alarmed. The smoke has no odor, it is non-toxic, non-staining, does not create a fire hazard, and will dissipate in a few minutes. The City will be distributing letters to notify the affected property owners before the City conducts the smoke test. Not everyone will receive a letter; but if you do receive a letter, you will be asked to pour water into your basement floor drains and into any unused sinks. This will seal the drain traps so that smoke will not enter your building through the drain. If smoke should enter your building during the test, open doors and windows to ventilate any smoke. If you have not received a letter from the City, then you don’t have to do this. If you have any concerns, please contact Jessica Spann (Engineering Service Coordinator) at 541-269-1181 ext. 2221.
