NBPL release – NORTH BEND, Ore.—January 16, 2019 — From 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm on February 5, 2019, there will be a free class on raising chickens at the North Bend Public Library. 4-H’s Pat Furay will teach the essentials. This class will be an overview to guide you in the selection and raising of backyard chickens. Topics covered will be: choosing a breed of chicken to fit your needs, egg production, laws and stewardship, tools & equipment needed, coop & pens, feeding, and health and disease. Pat Furay is from Coquille and is a 4-H Poultry Leader. As of 2018, she is also the Coos County Fair Poultry Barn Superintendent. This program is part of NBPL’s “DIY” programming for January through March. Other programs fitting this theme include the monthly “Yarn & Other Fibers” crafting hour held the first Thursday of every month at 4:00 pm, and a lecture on March 16 by local author Jan MacKell Collins on women’s history in the American West.
