News release from the Newport PD. On January 23, 2016, at approximately 11:00 a.m., Newport Police Officers were dispatched to the intersection of NW Nye and NW 10th Streets on the report of a two-vehicle crash. Witnesses reported two vehicles had been street racing when one of them crashed into a parked car. Newport Police Officers, and Newport Fire, responded to the area and conducted an investigation. During the investigation it was learned that Michael William Haiser, age 29 of Newport, had lost control of the vehicle he was driving and crashed into a parked car on NW Nye Street. It was discovered Haiser was involved in a street racing incident with a second vehicle at the time of the crash. The second vehicle involved, which fled the scene and has not been located, was reported to be silver Volkswagen convertible. The location where Haiser was street racing is a residential area, near the Newport Fire Department and the Betty Wheeler Memorial Field. Haiser’s vehicle narrowly missed hitting a pedestrian who was walking in the area. Haiser was arrested and lodged at the Lincoln County Jail on the charges of Reckless Driving; Reckless Endangering. He was also cited for Driving Uninsured; Speed Racing; Violation of the Basic Rule (Speeding). His bail was set at $30,000.
