Resisting Arrest, Jan. 12

News release from Newport PD. On January 9, 2015 at about 4:00 p.m., a Newport Police Officer located Robert Joseph Edington, age 40 of Newport, in the vicinity of the Bank of America on SW Coast Highway. Officers were searching for Edington after learning, earlier in the day, that Edington had an outstanding felony warrant for his arrest. Local area law enforcement had been advised that Edington was suspected to be using methamphetamine, and possibly armed with a handgun. When the Newport Police Officer observed Edington in the area of 10 SW Coast Highway, he attempted to contact and detain Edington, who immediately became resistive. Edington refused to comply with the Officer’s commands. Due to the previous information about a possible weapon, and Edington’s resistance, the Officer deployed a Taser. The Taser had only a temporary effect on Edington, who became combative and tried to take the Officer’s Taser. The Officer was able to take Edington to the ground and restrain him until additional Officers arrived. Edington continued to resist several Newport Officers by kicking, shouting, and struggling. Edington was taken into custody and transported to the Lincoln County Jail. During a search of Edington and his property, Officers located a larger pocket knife in the shape of a handgun, equipped with sights and a grip, but with a knife blade rather than a barrel. Officers also located methamphetamine. Edington was charged with the following: Possession of a Controlled Substance (Methamphetamine); Resisting Arrest; Carrying Concealed/Possession of Knife; and Felony Warrant. His bail was set at $90,000.
