On August 23, 2017, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a missing person from the Medford area. Steven Strauss,71, was last seen in Dallas on August 22, 2017 when he was visiting his brother for the eclipse. Efforts to locate Strauss were unsuccessful. On August 27, 2017, the Oregon State Police Newport Area Command was notified of a non-responsive male, in his vehicle, at the Beverly Beach State Park. Troopers and emergency workers responded to the scene and confirmed the vehicle belonged to Strauss and the male was Strauss. Strauss was confirmed deceased. Strauss’s wife had reported, to Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, a concern of his past medical conditions. The investigation at the scene did not suggest any concern of foul play. Steven Strauss had been employed with the Oregon State Police from November 1972 to September 1999. Throughout Strauss’ career, he graduated from Recruit school and was eventually promoted to Lieutenant. Strauss retired as a Forensic Criminalist 3 from the Central Point Crime Lab.
