Retired Senior Volunteer Program Struggling, Feb. 12

Southwestern Oregon Community College (SWOCC) has had a wonderful partnership with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) over the past 35 years. Thousands of Coos County citizens have enjoyed and benefited from their programming and events over those past decades. Unfortunately, as of July 1, 2014 RSVP will no longer be affiliated with SWOCC. The college had hoped to move the grant which has funded RSVP over the years to Oregon Coast Community Action (ORCCA) because they utilize so many RSVP volunteers and serve the same population. However, ORCCA was unsuccessful in obtaining a new federal grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). Therefore, local RSVP director, Christine Coles will be taking direction from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) regarding the future of RSVP activities in Coos County, seeking possible alternatives which may include SWOCC applying for a future RSVP grant. Nothing more is known at this time. Many wonderful stories abound in the community as a result of RSVP outreach. Non-profits and community organizations have benefited from the thousands of hours donated by Coos County senior volunteers. Their selfless efforts have provided many opportunities for the community to enjoy creative and popular programs and events. Patty Scott, Southwestern Oregon Community College President said, “We were saddened to learn that the RSVP grant was not refunded. We are thankful to all of the wonderful volunteers who have served the community for so many years.” If members of the community have questions or concerns they may contact Arlene Soto, Director of the Small Business Development Center at 541-756-6445; asoto@socc.edu.
