Sanitary Sewer Overflow, April 1

City of Coos Bay release – Wednesday morning the City of Coos Bay experienced a sanitary sewer overflow in the vicinity of 1260 S. 1st Street. The city’s contract operator investigated the incident and found a blockage in the sewer line approximately 270 feet south of the intersection of E. Lockhart Avenue and S. 1st Street. It is estimated that approximately 600 gallons of sewer water exited the manhole located just south of the blockage. The overflow was contained within a nearby stormwater line, and due to the low volume of discharge, it will most likely remain in that line until storm flows occur and the flow goes to an adjacent stormwater retention pond located at the south end of S. 1st Street. Tomorrow the contract operator will clean and flush the line and remove the sewer. The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) requires the city to report this as an overflow. As a result, DEQ, the Oregon Emergency Response System (OERS), and the Department of Agriculture were notified of the incident. Any questions can be directed to the City of Coos Bay Public Works Department at 541-269-8918.
