The city has contracted with Laskey Clifton to construct a pump station in Eastside and a force main that would transmit sewage from Eastside to another pump station located at the southwest intersection of Birch Avenue and Front Street. The contractor was working on the force main yesterday (Monday, October 14th); and at the end of the day, the contractor was closing the project site when three gallons of sewage spilled into a storm water catch basin located at the intersection of Birch Avenue and Front Street. The contractor brought in equipment to clean up the spill, but it is not known if the sewage entered into the bay. Since the treated and disinfected effluent did not discharge at the approved location, the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) requires the city to report this as an overflow. As a result, DEQ and the Oregon Emergency Response System (OERS) were notified of the incident. Any questions can be directed to the City of Coos Bay Public Works Department at 541-269-8918.
