Earlier Friday, Feb. 10th, the city reported a sanitary sewer pipe had collapsed along southbound Highway 101 between Birch and Alder Avenue. The city contracted with Knife River Materials to repair this pipe. Knife River Materials mobilized Saturday, February 11. Unfortunately, southbound highway traffic had to be diverted onto the northbound Highway 101 at Hemlock Avenue. From Hemlock Avenue to Commercial Street there will only be one thru lane for northbound and southbound traffic. It is anticipated that this detour will be in place until the middle of this week. Please expect delays and exercise caution through this detour area. Any questions can be directed to the Coos Bay Public Works Department at 541-217-4933. According to another release from the City, “the overflow has been contained but approximately 383 gallons have discharged to the Bay via an outfall at Birch Avenue and No. Front St. (approximately river mile 1.38).”
