Sanitary Sewer Overflows, Feb. 27

City of Coos Bay release – Currently, Coos Bay is experiencing a significant amount of rainfall. The increased rainfall impacts the sanitary sewer system because of a condition called inflow and infiltration (I/I). I/I occurs when ground water and surface water enters into the sewer system through deficiencies in the pipe. Unfortunately, this is common in ageing infrastructure. As a result of the high I/I, there are multiple sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) throughout the City. An SSO is an overflow, spill, or release of wastewater at a non-approved location. At this time, the SSOs are still under investigation and a subsequent Public Service Announcement will be issued with more detail, but due to the potential impacts to water quality issues the City wanted to inform the public. If you have immediate questions or would like further details, please contact City of Coos Bay Public Works Department at (541) 269-8918.
