Science on Screen features free movie Patch Adams and local history talk, April 21

The Southwestern Oregon Community College Foundation and the historic Egyptian Theatre present a free showing of Patch Adams, starring Robin Williams at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 23, at the theater in downtown Coos Bay. The film features the true story of Dr. Hunter “Patch” Adams, a man who enters the medical profession in midlife with a personal mission to treat patients with humor and compassion. Prior to the movie, local historian Steve Greif will present a mini-lecture on “Horsfall: Pioneer Doctor.” Dr. Horsfall served as a doctor making house calls around Coos County for more than six decades, starting in the late 1890s and practicing into the 1900s. Grant funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Science on Screen series are intended to bring science into our community, pairing great films with short lectures by and/or about noted experts in science, technology and medicine. The series is a collaboration between the Egyptian Theatre, Southwestern, the North Bend and Marshfield High School Science departments, South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve, and the Charleston Marine Life Center. Donations at the event will support Southwestern’s Health & Science Technology Building project. For additional information, please contact Elise Hamner at 541-888-7211.
