It was a first at the 3A State Basketball Tournament this year at Coos Bay, a female head coach of a boys’ basketball team. Heather Seely-Roberts, whose resume’ includes coaching girl’s teams at Ashland, Lakeridge, Canby, Sprague and NCAA Division III Southern Virginia University, also led her Yamhill-Carlton Tigers to the state title during this year’s Showcase event at Marshfield High School. It was quite a turn around for Y-C. Seely-Roberts was 4-21 her first season, 16-11 the next and 13-4 this year ending with a blue trophy win over Cascade Christian. Big part of that championship run was Seely-Roberts two twin sophomore boys Moroni (6-6) and Malachi (6-7). However, stating she likes a challenge and turning programs around, Seely-Roberts and her two boys are moving up to Lincoln of the 6A PIL for this upcoming school year. The Cardinals were 2-15 last season under a first-year coach. The twins say they also like the challenge and add that they are already familiar with many of the Portland area players through AAU basketball. You could almost hear a sigh of relief coming from across the state. It was the rest of the 3A coaches happy to hear the talented twins would not be back for their junior & senior years at their level. However, its also a loss to the Bay Area sports fans who are going to miss the return of the Seely-Roberts twins.
