Sheriff’s Office Warns Scam, Feb. 9

Scam warning from CCSO.  The Coos County Sheriff’s Office has received information of fraudulent callers to members of our county. The callers have reported being called but no determination of whether money was wanted or what the scam is. Both incidents reportedly did not speak with the subject to determine what they were trying to get. The first call was answered by office staff, the caller asked to speak with the doctor regarding a civil issue. The office staff asked if it was in regards to a patient but the caller with a thick southern accent refused to provide any additional information. The caller stated he was Lieutenant James West from the Coos County Sheriff’s Office; he gave a number of 541-819-9378. As of this morning this number returns to a southern voice saying he is a Captain with the Lancaster Sheriff’s Office. There is not a Lancaster Sheriff’s Office in Oregon or a Lieutenant James West with our office. The other report was for multiple messages left on an answering machine, the caller could not understand the name the caller was giving but you could understand he stated he was from the Coos County Sheriff’s Office the call back number he provided was 541-819-9317. This number did not have a voicemail set up as of this morning. The Coos County Sheriff’s Office encourages our citizens to be vigilant regarding these calls. A member of our office may call you regarding calls for service BUT we will never ask you for money over the phone for warrants, or jury duty.
