CBFD release – On Wednesday evening, shortly before 7:30 pm, the Coos Bay Fire Department responded to the report of a fire in a home at 520 Shorepines Ave. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke coming from a single-wide manufactured home. Crews quickly deployed hose lines, entered the home, and extinguished the fire. The owner of the home was able to get herself and two dogs out of the home, but her two cats were overcome by the toxic smoke. The fire was limited to a bedroom, but heavy smoke caused damage throughout the residence. A working smoke alarm was instrumental in quickly notifying the occupant of the fire; helping her escape and getting fire crews responding in time to limit the property damage. An investigation into the cause of the fire revealed that an electrical heater had overloaded the electrical circuit. The 1974 home was not insured.
