South Coast Striders, June 2

Requires Registration – Eel Lake Hike, Saturday June 5, 2021. This hike has a short and a long option. This hike is limited to about 15 people, but if demand is high (and we have enough leaders) we can stagger start times. Also, because a short hike is offered, we can accommodate more people. Requires Registration. There will be a 4 mile hike out and back along the Eel Lake Trail. This is a beautiful and fairly level trail which runs around the south edge of the lake for 3 miles. Short hikes will turn around after 2 miles. The longer hike (6 miles total ) will proceed at a brisker pace out to the end of the trail and back for those of you who want more of a workout. Hikers can explore the lake’s many inlets and maybe catch a glimpse of osprey, eagle and deer as you walk through forests of spruce, cedar, fir, and alder. Pack a lunch to eat in the picnic area after the hike. If you are a paddler, you might consider coming early (7:30am) to paddle on the lake before the wind picks up. If you time it right you could get in a nice paddle and then go on the hike at 10 am. The 10:00 hike start time gives you a chance for two activities. See the announcement on the Coos Trails Website. New Hike Guidelines: Hike groups will be limited to 15 people. You will be asked to complete a registration form so that we can control the number. Hikers will be asked to maintain social distance on the trail. Un-vaccinated hikers should plan on using face covering in crowded spots. Hikers should step off the trail to let others pass. Location and Time: Meet at day use area at 10:000 Driving Directions: From the Visitor Center in downtown Coos Bay drive 18 miles N. on Hwy 101 to Tugman State Park on your right. Turn in and follow the signs to the day use area at Eel Lake. Coming Soon! Hanging Rock.
