The southern end where two fault lines begin in the Pacific Ocean in Northern California and then run north parallel with the Oregon Coast shook with good sized earthquakes Monday, May 4. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 4.2-magnitude quake occurred at 12:17 p.m. and was located just off of Cape Mendocino, 160-miles west to southwest of Eureka, CA. A little closer to shore, a 3.1-magnitude quake was also recorded at 12:17 p.m., but just 48-miles southwest of the Humboldt Co. Seat. A smaller 2.9-magnitude quake led off the moderate quakes with a shaking at 6:30 a.m., 39-miles south to southwest of Eureka.
