Southwestern Music Department Ensembles Perform End of Term Concerts, March 7

The Music Department at Southwestern Oregon Community College is pleased to present its end of term concert series March 7 – 10, 2016 at the Hales Center for the Performing Arts on the Southwestern Coos campus, 1988 Newmark Ave., Coos Bay. Celebrating 51 years of music at Southwestern, the concerts are open to the public and will begin at 7:00 pm each night. The music department will be accepting donations to help pay for our many department needs. On Monday March 7, 2016 the Southwestern Symphonic Choir, under the direction of David Aakre, will perform a variety of music for large choir. The choir will be accompanied on Piano by our newest Piano Instructor at the College, Lynne Kuhn. On Tuesday March 8, 2016 the Southwestern Community Orchestra, under the direction of our new conductor Rolly Toribio (who is a Southwestern Alumnus), will perform a variety of works for Orchestra, including works by various composers including Mendelsohn, Tchaikovsky and Vivaldi. On Wednesday March 9, 2016 come join us for an evening of Chamber and Jazz music as the Southwestern Chamber Choir and Vocal Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Ida Jo Gates, will perform a variety of Classical, Jazz, Popular and Broadway classics arranged for Chamber Choir and Swing Choir. In addition, a number of student solos, duets, trios, quartets, and quintets will perform a variety of works from the vocal literature. Finally, on Friday afternoon March 11, 2016 the Southwestern Instrumental Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Professor Mike Turner, will perform at the South Coast Clambake Jazz Festival as part of the YMEF Youth Band Performances for the Festival. The performance is free to the public and will take place in the Salmon room at the Mill Casino with the Jazz Ensemble performing last at approximately 4:20 pm. Those persons younger than 21 will need to enter the Salmon room though the lobby of the Mill Casino Hotel and not through the Casino itself.
