Southwestern Oregon Community College, in partnership with Charleston Rural Fire Protection District, Coos Bay Fire Department, North Bay Fire District, and North Bend Fire Department, invites all high school students from Coos, Curry, and Western Douglas County school districts, who are interested in pursuing a career in the fire and emergency services, to attend the Southwestern Oregon Firefighter Camp being held at North Bend High School, 2323 Pacific Street, North Bend on Saturday, May 20, 2017 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Participants will be given the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in tasks relevant to the firefighter and emergency medical service (EMS), such as patient assessment and care, search and rescue, hoseline management, fire extinguisher operations, and vehicle extrication. Participants and their parents will be provided with college-specific information such as educational timelines, cost of attendance, and career data for the fire and emergency services. Participants will also be informed of the opportunity to become a Resident Volunteer Firefighter with one of four local fire departments: Charleston Rural Fire Protection District, Coos Bay Fire Department, North Bay Fire District, and North Bend Fire Department. Resident Volunteer Firefighters live in the fire station full time and gain valuable real-world experience as they complete their college education. This is the perfect opportunity for high school students to learn how they can go to school and volunteer locally, as they build their knowledge, skills, and abilities toward becoming a professional firefighter, paramedic, or both.
