New and returning students are preparing for the start of fall term at Southwestern Oregon Community College (SWOCC). The influx of new students signals the start of Southwesterns’ Laker Welcome activities, September 26-30, 2014. New student orientation activities and student life programs throughout the year will focus on a commitment to completing student goals, programs, and degrees. Students will begin moving into Student Housing on Friday, September 26th at 9:00 a.m. That evening is the annual Parent Orientation and Dinner at OCCI starting at 5 p.m. College staff and faculty will be helping checking students in throughout the weekend leading up to the first day of classes on September 29th. Following the move-in, Laker Welcome will begin Saturday September 27th. Check-in starts at 9 a.m. in the Hales Center for the Performing Arts and all new students must attend. Laker Welcome provides all new students—those living on-campus and throughout the community—with the chance to learn about college and community resources and about student activities. The information provided will help the new student feel more confident while making the transition into college life. The day is highlighted by a presentation from Southwestern Alumni Nik Edmondson, information sessions, and the annual free Welcome Expo and Barbeque. The BBQ and Welcome Expo begin at 12:00 p.m. in Union Square (between Randolph and Sitkum Halls). During the lunch, local businesses and organizations will be stationed around the square to introduce themselves to the College’s new students. Campus services will be available Saturday, September 27 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to serve new students as they prepare for the start of school. Before classes start, it is vital new students complete several tasks. Each should begin with placement testing (541-888-7405 for more information). When testing is complete, they should see their assigned advisor, or an advisor in Stensland Hall, to register for classes. Those needing accommodations due to a physical or learning disability should speak with Susan Anderson in Stensland Hall, 541-888-7405. The Coos Campus Student First Stop Center and Bookstore will offer extended hours Monday through Wednesday during the first week of classes.
