News release from Newport PD. On April 25, 2014, at approximately 6:00 a.m., Newport Police Officers responded to the Yaquina Bay Bridge on a report of a male subject that appeared to be preparing to jump from the bridge into the Yaquina Bay below. Several concerned citizens reported this information to the Dispatch center. Upon arrival, Newport Police Officers found the man holding on to the outside of the railing. Newport Police Officers persuaded the man to climb back over the railing. The man stated he wanted help, and was transported to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital for treatment and a mental health assessment.
