SWOCC release – Coos Bay, OR – The Southwestern Oregon Community College Judo Program has been recognized by the United States Judo Federation (USJF) for excellence in judo and has been designated a 5-Star Dojo. To qualify for this recognition, Southwestern’s program demonstrated commitment to promoting multiple facets of the sport of judo. Through USJF Development Programs, Southwestern has produced certified coaches, teachers, kata instructors, both national and regional referees, and hosts USJF sanctioned development clinics on an annual basis. Southwestern’s judo instructor Rob Schab was excited to be notified of the 5–Star Dojo designation. “Our program has been around for 28 years, and we have been committed to giving our students a wide range of judo experiences through our children’s classes, our physical education classes for adults, and Southwestern Judo Club activities. There are many places judo participants can find an area to excel in, whether competition at tournaments, improving teaching and coaching skills, or becoming a referee; all are important sport and life experiences,” Schab said. Judo was developed in 1882 in Japan from traditional Ju Jitsu systems; focusing on throwing and grappling techniques. The sport provides a means of physical education, self-defense, and creates an opportunity for participants to develop life skills useful beyond the training room. Judo is one of the most popular sports in the world and has been an Olympic sport since 1964. For more information on Southwestern’s adult and children’s Judo classes contact Rob Schab at 541-756-0414. Spring term classes begin March 30, 2020.
