SWOCC Swim
Southwestern Oregon Swimming competed in a dual meet at Linfield College on Friday night. Here are some results and a recap of the night provided by Coach Sandra Bullock. Women lost 136 – 62; Men lost 121 – 84. For Women: Alyssa Hedgpeth from Coos Bay made her debut as a member of the SWOCC Swim Team with solid swims, qualifying her to be a part of the SWOCC’s National Championship Team in 4 individual events. Utah native, Sienna Smith continues to be a major contributor to the women’s team as a freshman winning the 1000 freestyle with a new school record of 11:42.59. Annessa Clear was edged out of the win in the 50 free and came back with a decided victory in the 100 freestyle. Other second place finishes for the women’s team included Sienna Smith in the 200 IM and Nicole Quirino in the 100 butterfly. Nicole Quirino of Montana and Marilyn Johnson of Oregon both improved their seeding in the NJCAA with personal best times in all of their events, showing great progress in preparation for the National Championship meet in early March. The meet concluded with SWOCC sweeping the final event for both men and women with exciting victories in the 200 freestyle relays. The freshman relay team of Sienna Smith, Casey Jentges, Addy Shull and Annessa Clear secured the victory for the women. On the men’s side, Danniel Recinos (SO), Carlos McClerkin (FR), Wyatt Engler (SO), and Thomas Reams (SO) swam to the close victory. Sophomore, co-captain, Wyatt Engler led the Laker’s effort on the men’s side with win’s in both the 200 freestyle (1:47.93) and 500 freestyle (4:58.20). Sophomore, Christian Kubo won the 100 breaststroke with a 58.69. Other notable finishes included: Sophomore, co-captain, Thomas Reams was second in the 50 free after being edged out by Oliveira by .22 seconds. Texas Freshman, Carlos McClerkin was second in the 100 backstroke with a 59.39. Those team wins reinforced to the athletes that the hard work they are pouring into their training as a team and upholding the team’s core values is paying off. We are on track in our preparations for the NJCAA National Championship meet in early March. The Lakers compete again on Saturday, January 16th @ 11:45am at the Dixon Pool on OSU Campus where the Lady Lakers will compete in a tri-meet vs. Willamette University and Oregon State University. The men will compete in a dual vs. Willamette University.

Southwestern Oregon fell 90-83 to visiting Clark College of Vancouver, WA Saturday in an NWAC men’s basketball game at Prosper Hall on the Coos Bay Campus. Ivan Harper scored 20-points, Duke Mitchell 15, Davonta Price 10, Erik Johnson 9, Cameron Lucero 8, , Garrett Stout 8, Cooper Stateler 6, Jake Lucero 5, Mike Fesser Jr. 2. The Laker women also fell to the Penguins, 73-45. Kaylie Vaughan 14, Katelyn Rossback 6, Jade Chavez 6, Ricki Mock 6, Riley Wahl 6, Sydney Smith 4, Ashley Ensminger 2, Tiare Sugui 1. SWOCC’s women (0-3, 8-8) and men (1-2, 7-9) both play at Lane CC in Eugene on Wednesday.
