Report from Laker Swim Coach Sandra Bullock. We found some good success in the pool this past weekend at the Husky Invitational Meet. This was a unique meet format that included completely different courses for preliminaries and finals offering athletes an opportunity to complete in both short course yards and long course meters if they made it into the top 32 in each event. With this being an Olympic year, many athletes at the meet were hopeful to achieve Olympic trial cuts in the finals each night. Sophomore Captain, Thomas Reams led the effort on the men’s side with Freshman, Sienna Smith leading the women’s team to 6 new team records. The women’s team set 3 new relay team records and 10 new individual records. Sienna led the women’s effort with lifetime best swims and school records in 200 fly, 50 free, and 400 IM. Smith was also a member of all three record setting relays. Sophomore Captain, Brittany Banks was a major contributor to the success in the relays as well as setting personal lifetime best times in the 50 freestyle, 50 backstroke, 100 and 200 backstroke and the 100 freestyle. Annessa Clear continues to improve the school record in the 50 free to a 24.59. She went on to finals to place 16th. Addy Shull set a new school record with a lifetime best time of 1:11.25 in the 100 breaststroke. Thomas Reams went to finals in all three individual events he competed in. Most notably, he made it to the B Final in the 50 free and ended up swimming the 3rd fastest time of the night even though he was not in the A final heat. Olympian Darian Townsend was also competing at this meet for Olympic trial cuts and won the 50 freestyle. Christian Kubo also made it to scoring finals in 100 and 200 breaststroke. He had the best finish of the weekend for the team placing 7th in the 100 Breast and 18th in the 200. Freshman Christian Broschat also had the privilege of swimming at night by qualifying in the non-scoring D Finals in both 100 and 200 Breaststroke. Other athletes with lifetime best swims this past weekend included Sophomores Recinos, Carrillo, Kyllo, and Hernandez-Michalski as well as Freshmen Quirino, Rose, Crawford, Fields, Keeney, and Broschat. It was a great weekend of competition in preparation for our next meet which will be at the NJCAA National Championships the first week of March.
