Kermit Walker of Southwestern Oregon Community College Attempts World Record in Triple Jump
Southwestern Oregon Community College (SWOCC) is excited to announce that Kermit Walker, SWOCC’s Assistant Track Coach, will be attempting a world record in the Triple Jump event during the 4th Annual Prefontaine Masters and Open USATF Track and Field Meet. The meet will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2014 on the campus of Southwestern Oregon Community College. Kermit, 78 years young, has been competing in the Masters Meet since 1970 and currently holds the third best mark in the Triple Jump for the 75 to 79 age group. Field events begin at 9 am and the track events begin at 12 pm on April 12. Kermit Walker received his Masters degree in Public Administration in the 1960s and has built his life around coaching track and field, and teaching the benefits of fitness and physical conditioning. For the last 17 years, Kermit has been the Assistant Track Coach at Southwestern Oregon Community College. Kermit walks the walk as an example of good physical health. He states, “Having a fitness program increases your health and body functions. I take no medications and eat a lot of fish, fruits and vegetables every day.” As the instructor for the Physical Conditioning class, for folks 50 and over, Kermit has gained a loyal following. He is very popular with students and staff. He always has a big smile and is ready to lend a helping hand. A volunteer support group of students, staff and friends, calling themselves “Kermit’s Krew”, have formed to help at the meet and cheer Kermit on to success. SWOCC
Southwestern Oregon’s baseball team is scheduled to play Clark in Vancouver, WA Friday and Saturday. The Laker golf team is scheduled to lay Sunday and Monday against Columbia Basin in Pasco, WA. SWOCC’s track team will compete Friday and Saturday at the Spring Break Multi at Lane CC in Eugene.
