Targeting Cigarette Butts on Central Coast, May 5

Englund Marine Supply is a new sponsor of two cigarette butt disposal canisters for their store on Bay Blvd. in Newport. This “Hold on to Your Butt” program is a partnership between the Newport Chapter of Surfrider Foundation and local business and civic groups. The program aims to educate, raise awareness, and reduce cigarette-butt litter. This is a proactive approach to stop the flow of cigarette-butt litter from sidewalks to storm drains to our ocean. This effort includes cleanups, education, and the unique butt-canister sponsorship program. Newport Surfrider is glad to welcome Englund Marine as a new partner in this effort. Cigarette butts are the most littered item in the world. An estimated 5 trillion are discarded each year. Filters are made of plastic, which DOES NOT biodegrade. Cigarette butt filters are toxic waste. When wet, they leak toxins, posing a threat to wildlife.
