A new crime prevention tool could make it more difficult for burglars to fence stolen goods. A company called DataDot has already established a partnership with one Oregon police department, and another one from the coast is considering joining . DataDot makes “CopDots” which places property identification numbers on personal property with the dab of a special glue. The dab affixes dozens of tiny dots, less than the half the size of a poppy seed, on personal property with each containing 12-digit identification numbers visible only under a magnifying digital reader. The numbers are registered online. CopyDots can be found at Lowe’s Home Improvement stores and cost $29.98. The online registration for the consumer is free. DataDot also provides the police department with an ultraviolet light that detects the presence of CopDots and a digital reader to trace the registered owner. Window stickers are provided for the home. The Canby Police Dept. has already entered a partnership with DataDot, and Lincoln City plans to join.
