Transgender Guidance should not affect Oregon, Feb. 22

The federal government is expected to reverse ground on its Title IX guidance regarding transgender students, perhaps as soon as today. Because Oregon has separate state law that remains unchanged, the Oregon School Boards Association (OSBA) does not expect the federal change to have an immediate effect in this state. “Oregon schools are prohibited from discriminating against transgender students and staff — that remains unchanged,” said Spencer Lewis, an OSBA member services attorney. Lewis, who has become an authority on transgender issues in schools in recent years, is available to respond to reporter questions about the federal change. He can be reached at slewis@osba.orgĀ  OSBA is a member services organization for more than 200 locally elected boards serving school districts, education service districts and community colleges. It also provides services to charter schools and their boards.
