On September 10, 2015 at about 5:38PM, OSP Troopers and emergency crews responded to the report of a two vehicle crash on Highway 199 at MP 27 (just south of Kerby). A 1999 Buick Sedan operated by a 27 year old male from Costa Mesa, California was traveling northbound on HWY 199 and attempted to pass another vehicle where passing was not allowed (solid double line). The Buick traveled into the path of a southbound 2004 Ford Pickup where they collided head-on. The operator of the Ford, Michael E NOLAN, age 34, of Cave Junction suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital by family members. The 27 year old operator of the Buick, Joshua F GIBSON, age 27, of Costa Mesa, California, was initially taken to Three Rivers Medical Center in Grants Pass but then transferred to Oregon Health and Science University in Portland for serious injuries. A passenger in the Buick, Kean G KRAUSE, age 21, of Costa Mesa, California, was taken to Three Rivers Medical Center then transferred to Rogue Regional Medical Center in Medford. The status of their injuries are unknown at the time of this release. Three other passengers in the Buick, all from Costa Mesa, California, died from their injuries either at the scene or while being transported to the hospital. They are identified as Claire N HONSAKER (age 25), Steve E STINSON( age 28), and Christopher T BURKE (age 27). The highway was closed for approximately 4 hours with intermittent single lane openings.
