AT&T has a fiber optics cable facility near Whiskey Run in Coos County. That’s where a cable from the Far East comes ashore in the United States and then spreads across the country linking high-tech data from one continent to another. An Oregon Coast firm that began in 1986 is now poised to do the same with Australia. CoastCom, which began in Newport, was recently awarded a $5.3 million contract to link the “land down under” with the U.S. The fiber optic cable will come ashore at Pacific City in Southern Tillamook County. CoastCom officials claim more Internet data currently flows through their center than any other facility on the Coast.
