The men’s tennis program has earned All-ITA Academic Team recognition, while three Ducks, Daan Maasland, Brent Chin and Armando Soemarno have each earned ITA All-Scholar Athlete honors, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced. Oregon put together a season to remember in 2016, picking up its first-ever NCAA tournament win and achieving a new high ranking (No. 20) in the ITA polls, while also thriving in the classroom. The Ducks’ commitment to academic excellence landed them on the All-ITA Academic Team for the fourth consecutive season. Leading the way both on the court and in the classroom was Maasland, who earned his fourth straight ITA All-Scholar Athlete selection. Maasland was an All-Pac-12 second-team selection, going 19-14 in singles and 23-7 in doubles, while also receiving Pac-12 All-Academic first-team honors. Maasland’s commitment and success both as a player and a student also earned him the Tom Hansen Conference Medal, which is awarded annually to each member institution’s outstanding senior male and female student-athlete based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership. Maasland posted a 3.60 GPA while earning his degree in business administration. Chin, a senior from Portland, Ore., earns his second All-Scholar Athlete selection as a Duck after earning a 3.67 GPA while majoring in business administration. Chin posted 3-2 records in both singles and doubles play this season. Soemarno, a freshman from Jakarta, Indonesia, received All-Schlar Athlete honors after achieving a 3.54 GPA in his first season in Eugene while majoring in pre-business. Soemarno established himself as one of the top doubles players on the team in 2015-16, teaming up with Jayson Amos to go 18-3 while garnering ITA rankings as high as 18. In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, a player must be a varsity letter winner, have a grade-point average of at least 3.50, and have been enrolled at their present institution for at least two semesters. The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher. All eligible student-athletes must compete in one or more varsity matches.
