Language has been included in the US House passed federal Frank LoBiondo Coast Guard Authorization Act of 2018 that includes permanent funding for the USCG Air Facility at Newport on the Central Oregon Coast. The Coast Guard has attempted to close the day-facility in the past as part of a budget move, but Fourth District Congressman Peter DeFazio has worked to acquire the funding to have a US Coast Guard helicopter permanently stationed at the air strip south of the city. Currently, a helicopter crew from Air Station North Bend makes the 45-minute flight north daily to man the station in the event of a rescue. Congressman De Fazio says the Newport air station handles half of the emergency calls on the Central Coast. Without their presence, help would have to wait for a helicopter to respond from North Bend or Astoria.
