Volunteer with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) at Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area or the North Spit of Coos Bay and be a part of a nationwide celebration of National Public Lands Day this September. National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest volunteer event for public lands. On Saturday, September 17, volunteers will install fencing and complete other gardening work at the at the Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area pollinator garden. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dean Creek is located three miles east of Reedsport, on Highway 38 and the pollinator garden is adjacent to the interpretive kiosk. Volunteers can lend a hand cleaning up the North Spit Beach on Saturday, September 24. The BLM/SOLV event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. As part of the fun, volunteers will be shuttled from the North Spit Boat Ramp to the beach in a five-ton military truck. The event will also include a free class on how to make a reusable bag from a t-shirt. Volunteers will receive lunch. Those participating in either event will receive a free National Public Lands Day t-shirt and a voucher good for a fee-free day at a public lands site. The BLM will provide the necessary tools and safety equipment to complete the projects. Volunteers should bring water and sunscreen, and wear sturdy shoes and work clothes.
