Just after 10:15 p.m., on July 8, 2017, Troopers from the Central Point Area Command of the Oregon State Police responded to a semi-tractor trailer versus vehicle crash on the northbound I-5 lanes at the milepost 24 interchange, within the city limits of Medford. The initial investigation revealed a 2002 GMC truck operated by 81 year old Medford local Ellis Feinstein, entered the I-5 northbound lanes, traveling in the wrong direction (southbound) from the Exit 24 Interchange northbound off-ramp. The GMC truck traveled several hundred feet before colliding head-on in the A-lane with a 2016 Freightliner Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) operated by 49 year old British Columbia resident, Harminder Singh Nijjar. Feinstein, who was the sole occupant of the GMC truck, died as a result of his injuries sustained in the crash. Nijjar, who was also alone in his CMV, did not sustain any injuries.
