Interfering with EMT
News release CCSO.  On September 3, 2017, at about 2237 hours, the Coos County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to respond to Bastendorff beach to assist with a medical call for service regarding a combative patient. A male identified as Declan Chesbrough was identified as being the suspect. It was learned that Chesbrough, a Vermont native, had fought against EMT efforts to assist him and remove him from being swept away from the incoming tide. Chesbrough was speaking incoherently and is suspected to have been under the influence of a drug. Chesbrough was placed under arrest and fought against efforts to place him into custody. Chesbrough was eventually placed under arrest for the alleged crimes of Interfering with an EMT, Resisting Arrest and Disorderly Conduct II. As Deputy Sean Sanborn was advising Chesbrough of his citation he spat upon the uniformed Deputy and was additionally charged with Aggravated Harassment. Chesbrough was transported to the Coos County Jail where he was booked and released to the jail staff.

Criminal Trespass
News release CCSO.  On 09/03/2017, Deputies had been dispatched to 63513 S. Jade Street for a report of a Criminal Trespass that occurred at that location. Deputies had already been to that location on several occasions and told the suspect who was identified as Amanda Coughtry not to return. Amanda was again contacted leaving the residence. Amanda was advised she was under arrest. Amanda pulled away from the Deputy on several occasions and began to actively resist. Amanda was ultimately pepper sprayed which had no effect. Amanda continued to resist along with kicking and slapping the Deputy. A Taser was deployed and was also not effective. Amanda ran to a neighbor’s house, went inside and slammed the door, locking it behind her. Amanda convinced the neighbor she was being assaulted by someone claiming to be a cop. The neighbor produced a firearm in an attempt to prevent any harm. The neighbor was contacted by phone and agreed to open the door. Amanda was placed into custody for charges of Criminal Trespass 1, Resisting Arrest, Assault on a Public Safety Officer, Interfering with Police and Escape II. Amanda was transported to the Bay Area Hospital where she was evaluated and later transported to the Coos County Jail. Amanda was held on a bail of $5, 5000.00. As of Tuesday morning she is still in custody. The Coos County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Coos Bay Police Department and the Oregon State Police.

Domestic Harassment
News release CCSO.  On September 2, 2017 the Coos County Sheriff’s Office responded to 92726 Catching Creek Road for a report of a disturbance. Upon arrival, a Deputy located Hurt, shirtless in the driveway. During the investigation, the victim told the Deputy that Hurt had pushed her to the ground during the incident. The victim also told the Deputy she wanted to pursue Harassment charges against Hurt. Hurt was arrested for Harassment (Domestic) and transported to the Coos County Jail without incident. Hurt was held in lieu of $5,000 bail. He was later released on his own recognizance to a responsible party.

DUII
News release CCSO.  On September 2, 2017, at about 1756 hours, the Coos County Sheriff’s Office responded to Spinreel ATV following a report of an ATV crash which had happened on Dune 3, Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area earlier in the day. Upon arrival, it was learned the operator of the ATV, Cody Umentum, of Wisconsin, had gone over the top of a dune, and had caused a side-by-side ATV to flip, end over end. During the course of the investigation, signs of impairment were noted. Umentum submitted to Standardized Field Sobriety Tests and was found to be impaired to a noticeable and perceptible degree and was placed under arrest for Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants. Umentum admitted to having smoked marijuana earlier in the day. Umentum provided a breath sample which showed him to have a BAC of .00% which was not consistent with his level of impairment. Umentum submitted to a Drug Recognition Evaluation following which, the evaluator rendered an opinion that Umentum was under the influence of cannabis and unable to operate a vehicle safely. Umentum was transported to the Coos County Jail. Umentum, a college student from Wisconsin was visiting Oregon and had chosen to partake in recreational cannabis. The Coos County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the public that while Cannabis may be legal to consume, it remains illegal to drive under the influence of it, or any other intoxicant.
