News release from the Coos Bay PD. On Thursday, October 16, 2014 at approximately 11:15 am the Coos Bay Police Department received information that the Coos County Sherriff’s Office had taken a report of a male who had been kidnapped at gunpoint in Coos Bay. As the crime had reportedly begun in Coos Bay, the Coos Bay Police Department took over the investigation. The victim, who was later identified as Richard Hazen, reported to investigators that a male riding with him brandished a gun and directed Hazen to drive to a remote location in the Sumner area. Once there, the suspect directed Hazen to exit the vehicle and remove his pants. Hazen complied with the demand. The suspect then took Hazen’s pants and stole Hazen’s vehicle. Hazen then walked to a nearby residence to ask them to call 911 on his behalf. At about 11:44 am an officer from the Coos Bay Police Department located Hazen’s unoccupied vehicle in Coos Bay. During the ensuing investigation, 21 year-old Gabriel T. Alonzo of Coos Bay was identified as the suspect in the case. Alonzo was later located in Coos Bay, not far from where the vehicle had been located. Alonzo was found to be in possession of stolen property from Hazen’s vehicle. He was subsequently taken into custody for Robbery I and Kidnapping II and transported to the Coos County Jail.
