Marshfield’s girls tuned-up for their upcoming OSAA Basketball playoff game with an extra regular season contest at SkyEm League champion Junction City (20-5) Friday night.  The Lady Pirates (23-2) won 44-30.  Both teams had room for one more game on their schedules, and both were in the middle of a long layoff.  The two teams had met previously this season back in December in Coos Bay with the Lady Pirates prevailing 57-41.  This time Marshfield won a tight game with tough defense in the second half.  The game was tied at nine after one, but the top-ranked Lady Pirates out-scored JC 35-21 over the last three periods.  Junior guard Tess Garrett scored a game high 22-points.  Marshfield opens the OSAA 4A First Round on Friday, March 2, at home to Yamhill-Carlton.  The winner advances to the OSAA State Championships March 8-10 at Pacific University in Forest Grove.  Junction City host North Marion in its first round game Friday, March 2.  The Oregon West Conference advanced five teams (Y-C, Newport, Cascade, Stayton, No. Marion) to the First Round, while the Skyline (Hidden Valley, Henley, Mazama) had three, and the FWL (MHS, Brookings) and Tri-Valley (Madras, Molalla) each had two.
