SWOCC release – Coos Bay, OR – Southwestern Oregon Community College Foundation and the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort will host a golf tournament fundraiser for scholarships. Opportunity Links! is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, April 8, at the 13-hole Bandon Preserve course, 57744 Round Lake Road, Bandon. Check-in is at 8:15 a.m. at the Bandon Trails Golf Shop area. This is first-ever event features a fun 13-team scramble-style game. There will be four golfers per team, with each team guided by a Southwestern student Golf Team member. Each team will be escorted to a starting hole, and tee-off is at 9 a.m. This is a walk-only course. Golfers will compete for prizes and a scholarship named after the team. Oregon Coast Culinary Institute student chefs will provide treats and refreshments throughout the course, and all golfers can enjoy a catered lunch after the tournament. Competitors will be able to enjoy their lunches outdoors at the Practice Center or take them off-resort. In addition, golfers can stay and enjoy the 50-acre Practice Center’s amenities, including two practice ranges, a putting green and the 9-hole, par-3 Shorty’s practice course. Four-person scramble events are fun, especially for people who want to play but don’t have a lot of experience. Rules are simple. Each player on the team hits a tee shot. The team chooses the best tee shot and selects that position for the next shot. Each player hits again from the selected position, and the process continues until someone from the team makes the putt for completion of the hole. The group records its score for the hole and moves on to the next teeing area where the process continues until completion of the round. Curious about Bandon Preserve? Designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, this 13-hole, par-3 course begins high atop a sand dune, and meanders up and down hills toward the beach and the spectacular Pacific Ocean vista. It is fun course for players of all skill levels. Cost is $200 per person, or $750 per team. 100 percent of the funds raised go to support scholarships at Southwestern’s Coos and Curry campuses. Each team will be asked to follow COVID-19 safety protocols and remain socially distant from other teams. For details or to golf in support of scholarships, go to https://bit.ly/3shfUrl.
