News release SWOCC – The Geology Department at Southwestern Oregon Community College has teamed up with the Egyptian Theatre in Coos Bay to present a free showing of the movie Dante’s Peak starring Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton as part of the 5th Annual National Evening of Science on Screen at 7:00 pm on March 27, 2018. Prior to the movie, Dr. Ron Metzger (Professor of Geology at Southwestern) will share a short presentation on “Risk & Reward – Volcanoes in the Western United States”.  Metzger will look at how accurate Dante’s Peak is relative to actual volcanic eruptions like Mt St Helens on which the movie is loosely based.  We’ll also have a brief discussion about how scientists predict volcanic eruptions.  Following the free showing of the movie, there will be an opportunity for a question and answer session with Professor Metzger. Science on Screen is an initiative of the Coolidge Corner Theatre, in partnership with the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.  An additional local sponsor is the Coos County Cultural Coalition. Donations will be accepted and will go towards the Beetham Family Match for Southwestern Oregon Community College’s Health & Science Technology Building campaign, meaning every dollar donated at this event will be doubled. For additional information please contact Ron Metzger at 541-888-7216.
