CCSO release – Date / Time: March 13th, 2024, at 9:45 p.m.; Case Number(s): 2024-00006159; Classification: Menacing (D), Reckless Driving, DUII; Location: Lakeside / Airport Way; Suspect(s): Nicholas J. Owsinek (33); Male arrested on several charges after a 911 call of a disturbance and subsequent crash reported in Lakeside. On March 13th, 2024, at 9:45 p.m., the Coos County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center received a 911 call of a disturbance in progress on North 6th Street in Lakeside, Oregon. Deputies H. Francis and S. Starr responded to the area. Deputy Francis responded to the residence on 6th Street, and Deputy Starr was diverted to a crash on Airport Way. During the investigation, it was learned that the suspect, Nicholas J. Owsinek (33), fled from the residence on 6th Street in his white GMC pickup truck. Deputies learned that this was the same truck that was involved in the crash on Airport Way a short time later. Deputy Starr contacted the pick-up driver, who was identified as Nicholas J. Owsinek (33). Nicholas was arrested on the charge of Domestic Menacing from Deputy Francis’ investigation. Nicholas was charged additionally with Reckless Driving and Driving Under the influence of intoxicants from Deputy Starr’s investigation into the crash. Nicholas J. Owsinek was transported to the Coos County Jail, where he was booked and remains in custody. The vehicle was towed from the location by Mast Brothers Towing.
Assault, Cape Arago Hwy.
CCSO release – Date / Time: March 13th at 5:07 p.m.; Case Number(s): 2024-00006139; Classification: Assault II, Unlawful Use of a Weapon; Location: Cape Arago Hwy / Lighthouse Way; Suspect(s): Valerio Sandoval Jr. (66); Male arrested after an incident involving a knife on Cape Arago Hwy near Lighthouse Way. On March 13th, 2024, at 5:07 p.m., the Coos County Sheriff’s Dispatch Center received a 911 call of a disturbance in progress involving a knife near the intersection of Cape Arago Hwy and Lighthouse Way. Several agencies initially responded for assistance, including the Coos County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police, Coos Bay Police, and Coquille Tribal Police. Upon arrival, Deputies found one man suffering from stab wounds. First aid was provided, and the victim was transported to Bay Area Hospital. Sgt. S. Moore headed up an investigation into the incident, culminating with Valerio Sandoval Jr. (66) being placed under arrest on charges of Assault II and Unlawful Use of a Weapon. Valerio Sandoval Jr. (66) was transported to the Coos County Jail, where he was booked and remains in custody.
Medal of Merit

Starr receives Sheriff’s Office Medal of Merit for actions related to a case he investigated in December 2023; On March 13th, 2024, Coos County Sheriff Gave Fabrizio awarded the Sheriff’s Office Medal of Merit to Deputy Shawn Starr for his exemplary efforts to the citizens of Coos County through his diligent and exceptional investigation of a case in December of 2023. Because of Deputy Starr’s investigation, the case was solved, along with additional cases that will likely be solved due to Deputy Starr’s attention to detail and professionalism, not to mention removing the suspect from a position to commit further crimes.
