News release from the Coos Co. Sheriff’s Office. “On January 28, 2016, at about 0200 hours, Coos County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to 91134 Cape Arago Hwy in Coos Bay after a Yellow Cab Taxi driver reported he was assaulted by a male who refused to pay his fare. Upon arrival Deputies met with the victim, 49 year old Todd Bates of North Bend who reported he picked a male subject on a fare and reaching his destination found the subject did not have enough money to pay for his cab fare. The subject attempted to flee from Mr. Bates into the residence. Mr. Bates followed the male to see which residence he was going to. The subject then confronted Mr. Bates and yelled at him to leave him alone. The subject punched Mr. Bates multiple times to stop him from following him. Mr. Bates retreated to his cab and called 911. Sheriff’s Deputies were able to locate the male subject and identified him as, David Schellong, 42 years old of Coos Bay. Mr. Schellong eventually made good on his fare but Mr. Schellong was arrested for Assault IV and transported him to the Coos County Jail. Mr. Bates did not need medical attention at the scene.” Schellong was one of the crewmembers rescued after the fishing vessel Sara Jo capsized Tuesday afternoon near the entrance to the Coos Bay Channel.
