Only Douglas survived its high school girls’ basketball “Play-In” game last Friday. The Far West League’s other two entries both lost on the road. Marshfield stumbled at Baker 57-50, while North Bend dropped a 45-39 overtime game at Gladstone. Douglas beat visiting Newport 48-42 to advance to the 4A OSAA First Round. League champion Brookings-Harbor had a bye. The Bruins will host Henley on March 4, while Douglas travels to La Grande, also March 4. Winners advance to the OSAA 4A Girls State Tournament at Forest Grove March 10.

Sisters beat North Bend 44-39 to advance to the First Round of the OSAA 4A State Basketball playoffs. The Outlaws will play at Henley March 5. The winner of that game advances to the OSAA 4A State Boys Basketball Tournament at Liberty High School in Hillsboro March 10-12. North Bend’s season ends with a 9-12 record.

In a battle of 2016 league champions, Marshfield beat Cottage Grove 66-54 in the South Willamette Valley Friday night. It’s the second time the Pirates have beaten the Lions this season. Marshfield led all the way in winning their 23rd game of the season against two losses. Senior Rylee Trendell led the Pirates with a season-high 28-points. According to MHS AD Greg Mulkey, Marshfield will meet Molalla (12-12) in the first round of the 4A OSAA State Boys Basketball playoffs Friday night, March 4, 8:30 p.m., in Coos Bay; however, the OSAA website has the game listed for Saturday. The winner advances to the OSAA 4A State Tournament at Liberty High School in Hillsboro March 10-12.

Marshfield crowned three individual champions and finished second to Crook Co. at the OSAA 4A State Wrestling Tournament in Portland Saturday. The Cowboys tallied 249-points to take first place, while the Pirates scored 175.0. Henley was third with 150.0 followed by Sweet Home 131.0. MHS results: 106 – Cole Smith 1st; 113 – Joseph Paramo 3rd; 120 – Ryder McKee 2nd; 126 – AJ Lira 2nd; 160 – Travis Wittlake Jr. 1st; 170 – Gary Jantzer 1st 195 – Joey Vigue 4th.
