Marshfield’s girls moved into a tie for third place in the 4A Far West League basketball race with a 52-32 win over Douglas in Coos Bay Friday night. The Lady Pirate (4-3, 13-6) victory avenged an earlier loss to the Trojans (4-3, 8-8) at Winston. The Pirate boys used a strong third period en route to a 56-33 win over the Douglas boys in the nightcap. Marshfield (6-1, 10-8) outscored the Trojans (0-6, 1-14) 25-11 after the break to enter the fourth with a 48-26 lead. Sophomore Kody Dean led the Pirates with 14-points on four three-pointers. Jake Miles scored 12 and Rylee Trendell had 10. Marshfield’s boys won the JV game over Douglas 52-37. The Pirates play at Brookings-Harbor Tuesday.

North Bend (5-1, 12-5) lost to visiting Cascade Christian (16-2) 56-39 in a non-league boys’ basketball game at home Friday night. The Bulldogs host South Umpqua Tuesday.

Sutherlin’s boys (5-2, 13-5) moved into sole possession of third place in the 4A Far West League following a 64-61 win at Brookings-Harbor (4-3, 11-6) Friday night. In the other FWL game, South Umpqua (3-4, 10-7) beat visiting Siuslaw (1-6, 5-12) 60-33 at Tri City. On the girl’s side, unbeaten Sutherlin (7-0, 18-0) picked up a two-game cushion on Brookings-Harbor (5-2, 15-2) on the road Friday night. The Bulldogs downed the second place Bruins 50-33. Also, Siuslaw (2-4, 4-12) won at South Umpqua (1-5, 2-15) 59-48. North Bend (0-6, 2-13) had a bye.

Marshfield fell to visiting Cascade Christian of Medford Saturday afternoon 53-34 in a non-league boys’ basketball game in Coos Bay. The Pirates actually took a small lead on the No. 3 ranked 3A team in the second period, and trailed by three, 24-21, at the half. However, the Challengers (17-2) outscored Marshfield 29-13 in the second half to secure the win. Hunter Olson scored 12 and Justin Cooper 10 to lead the Pirates (10-9).
JV II bbxb
Marshfield won its own Jayvee II four-team basketball tournament Saturday in Coos Bay. The Pirates won the opener over North Bend 60-41. The Bulldogs’ Garrett Curtis led all scorers with 19-points. Nick Minton led Marshfield with 12. The second game was won by Brookings-Harbor over South Umpqua 54-33. The Bruins’ Noah James scored 16. In the third game, North Bend downed South Umpqua 46-45. Curtis had 22 for the Bulldogs, and Daven Smith scored 18 for the Lancers. In the championship game, Marshfield beat Brookings-Harbor 57-46. Brett Wyatt scored 12 for the Pirates, while James and David Freeman each had 11 for the Bruins.
