Fatal near Veneta, Jan. 31

On Sunday 01/29/2017 at about 10:55pm the Lane County Deputies responded to a single vehicle MVA involving a dark colored 1993 Volkswagen Passat 4D on Central Road at MP 1, east of Veneta, OR in Lane County. Upon arrival, they discovered a fatality and requested the Oregon State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit take over the investigation. The preliminary investigation revealed the Volkswagen was traveling northbound and for an unknown reason, veered off the roadway onto the right shoulder while negotiating a left hand sweeping curve. The vehicle continued driving on the shoulder until it overturned, collided with fence and ejected the two occupants. The vehicle landed on its roof and was consumed by fire. One of the occupants sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene by medical personnel at 11:10pm. The second occupant, a juvenile, sustained critical injuries and was transported to River Bend Hospital by ambulance and later to Good Samaritan in Corvallis, OR. The decedent was identified as: GRAVES, LIAN ESRAEL, 20 year of age. Next of kin notification was made by LCSO and Central Road was shut down for approximately six hours.
