It was a discarded Smoke Detector, May 8

News release from the Newport PD.  May 6, 2014 at approximately 9:30 a.m., Newport Police Officers responded to an alert by a Lincoln County Deputy Sheriff who had been waved down by a citizen walking in Don Davis Park at 840 W. Olive St. The citizen reported to the Deputy that a beeping sound was coming from one of the public trash cans. The park was immediately cleared of patrons, and the trash can searched. Police Officers located a residential smoke detector which had apparently been discarded in the bin. During their investigation, Police Officers learned the beeping sound had been detected by passers-by for as many as four days prior.  Newport Police Officers were assisted by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, and the City of Newport Parks and Recreation Department. The park remained closed for approximately one hour.
