News release from the Coos Co. Sheriff’s Office. On July 17 2015 at about 1630 hours Coos County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the report of an injury accident in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation area (ODNRA). The reporting parting indicated that the crash occurred in the Hauser area of the sand dunes and involved a mother and her 11 year old daughter. When deputies arrived they found the victims on the back side of a dune commonly known as “V8 hill”. The operator of the ATV was Shelby Burtis, 36 year old out of Hoodsport Washington and her 11 year old daughter, Megan. Shelby was operating an Arctic Cat Utility ATV heading south bound on the sand, when she crested the hill and was not aware of the steep Razor on the back side of the dune. She was not able to stop her momentum before she drove over the back side of the dune causing the ATV to somersault over top of her and her daughter. She was riding with a group of family members who had stopped at the top of V8 hill to wait for her, they were able to quickly get to her aid and remove the bike from the top of both riders. Shelby had received a neck and leg injury and her daughter had an arm injury as a result of the crash. Both victims were removed from the sand with the help of Hauser Fire and Rescue and Bay Cities Ambulance. Both victims were taken to Bay Area Hospital where they were treated for their injuries
