The Master Food Preservers of Coos County will hold a Boiling Water Canning workshop on Saturday, March 1, 2014, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Boiling water canning is the process used to can fruits, jams & jellies, and other high-acid foods. Workshop participants will learn the basics of this process: how to fill jars, load the canner, etc. The how-tos and what-ifs of canning will be thoroughly explored, as will food safety and the proper care of canning equipment. The fundamentals of making jams and jellies will also be covered, and participants will have the opportunity to practice their skills as they work in teams to can up a batch of jelly. The workshop will be held at the OSU Extension Service, 631 Alder Street in Myrtle Point. Cost of the class is $10.
