News release CBPD. On 11/17/16 at around 12:36 PM the Coos Bay Police Department received a report that a man inside the Fishing Vessel “Genesis”, which was moored at the Coos Bay City Docks, had turned on the propane inside the boat and was threatening to blow it up. Coos Bay Police and Fire Departments immediately responded to the scene, and evacuated the surrounding area. ODOT responded and routed northbound traffic on S. 1st Street (HWY 101) to Elrod and around the scene. Police attempted to communicate with the suspect from a safe distance by using a loudspeaker. At around 2:47 PM after almost two hours of attempting contact with the man inside the boat, he finally came out of the cabin. A police arrest team moved in and took the man into custody. The man was identified as 51 year old Aaron R. Nordholm DOB: 10/29/65. When police contacted Mr. Nordholm, they found that a 5 gallon propane tank was still releasing gas inside the boat. The tank was turned off and the boat was secured after it was determined to be safe. There were no injuries as a result of the incident. Mr. Nordholm was transported to Bay Area Hospital by ambulance where he was admitted for observation. Nordholm was issued citations in lieu of custody on charges of second degree disorderly conduct, and two counts of recklessly endangering.
