Central Coast Transient Camp Cleaned Up, Dec. 31

A Lincoln County Jail workcrew in conjunction with the Newport Police Department, combined efforts to clean up “Safe Haven Hill” located at the south end of the Yaquina Bay Bridge. There were several transient camps on the site which were abandoned. A substantial amount of garbage, tents, tarps, make shift structures and other waste was strewn over the area. The group spent approximately 2 1/2 hours dismanteling and removing the debris and placing it into a large dumpster for disposal. Safe Haven Hill was designated several years ago by City and County Officials as a “Tsunami Safe Zone” for business and local area citizens as an evacuation point in the event of a Tsunami. There are efforts to further develop the area as time and funding become available.
