News release from the Coos Bay Fire Dept. On December 24th, at 2:38 p.m., the Coos Bay Fire Department responded to the report of a kitchen fire at 590 Fillmore Street which is located in the Empire area of Coos Bay. The first arriving firefighters found light smoke coming from the structure near the front of the home. The homeowner’s mother arrived at the home; and upon opening the front door, discovered the structure full of smoke. The owner was not home at the time of the fire. The home is owned and occupied by Jack O’Leary. The home’s kitchen suffered heavy fire, smoke, and heat damage. The rest of the home suffered significant heat and smoke damage. The fire was knocked down and under control in less than 15 minutes. Firefighters remained on scene for an additional hour mopping up the scene and removing smoke from the structure. An investigation into the cause of the fire was conducted by the Coos Bay Fire Department. It has been determined that the area of origin of the fire was in the kitchen next to the refrigerator. The cause of the fire appears to be electrical in nature and occurred in or near the microwave oven which was located on the kitchen counter next to the refrigerator. The Coos Bay Fire Department estimates the fire damage to the structure to be $75,000.00 and $15,000.00 to the occupant’s contents. The owner of the structure has insurance on the home.
